10 Ways Pocket Notebooks Replaced My Phone
10 Ways to Use Pocket Notebooks for Calm, Clarity, and Consistency

For the past nine years, I’ve been using pocket notebooks to bring more calm, clarity, and consistency to my life. While I’ve journaled for about 13 years, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I developed a structured system to replace certain phone-based tasks with my notebooks. The goal wasn’t to eliminate my phone entirely but to reduce distractions and use technology more intentionally. Here are 10 ways I’ve integrated pocket notebooks into my daily life to achieve this.

1. Parcel Tracker
Online shopping often leads to obsessively checking package statuses on your phone. To curb this, I dedicate a page in my pocket notebook to track deliveries. Each entry includes:
The item’s name
A checkbox
The expected delivery date
This simple system lets me quickly check what’s coming and when, without diving into emails or apps. If a delivery gets delayed, I cross it out and update the date. Messy pages aren’t a flaw—they’re a sign of real life and a reminder to stay focused.

2. Reading List
I read about 50 books a year and keep a running list in my pocket notebook. This serves two purposes:
It reminds me to pick up a book or my Kindle instead of doom-scrolling.
It helps me plan and get excited about upcoming reads, like G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown series.
Flipping to my reading list keeps me connected to my goals and makes my reading habit more intentional. Even if I don’t hit 50 books, tracking progress in my notebook feels rewarding.

3. Research and Prompts
Whether I’m Googling or prompting an AI, I use my notebook to outline my research goals, questions, and parameters. Writing these down helps me:
Develop thoughts more deeply
Stay focused and avoid rabbit holes
Make research feel personal and purposeful
For example, instead of getting sidetracked researching paella while exploring my family history, my notebook keeps me on track with clear objectives.

4. Messages and Encouragement
When someone pops into my mind, I jot their name in my notebook and note how I can encourage them—whether it’s about parenting, their career, or a personal goal. This practice:
Deepens relationships by prompting thoughtful outreach
Prevents fleeting thoughts from being forgotten
Avoids rushed, half-hearted messages sent in line at the grocery store
Taking 60 seconds to reflect on what matters to someone makes connections more meaningful.

5. Calendar
I use my pocket notebook as a simple paper calendar, listing dates, days of the week, and key events like birthdays, holidays, or liturgical dates. This makes time feel personal. For instance, finding my mom’s old journal with a heart drawn around my birthdate was a touching moment that a phone calendar could never replicate. A paper calendar grounds me and connects me to family traditions.

6. Journaling
Journaling in a pocket notebook lets me capture ideas, reflections, and moments wherever I am. Unlike my old A5 notebooks, the pocket size is portable and perfect for quick notes during devotionals or daily observations. It’s a space to connect ideas, explore my inner world, and bring more of what I want into my life.

7. To-Do List
A to-do list in my pocket notebook is more effective because it’s part of a broader system. Since I’m already flipping through the notebook for other tasks, I’m more likely to check and update my to-dos. Physically crossing off tasks is satisfying, and it’s easy to review past lists to track progress or revive forgotten tasks.

8. Devotional Space
As a Christian, I use my notebook for spiritual reflections, whether it’s jotting down thoughts during a novena, praying the rosary, or reading scripture. This dedicated space helps me develop my spiritual life and connect with my family’s heritage of Spanish mystics. It’s a pillar that inspires me to be a better person.

9. Travel Itinerary
For travel, I create a spread in my notebook with all trip details: times, confirmation codes, addresses, and weather forecasts. I also include a notes section for things like flight delays or follow-ups. Having everything in one place eliminates the need to dig through apps or notifications, making travel calmer and more enjoyable.

10. Project Management
I use pocket notebooks to manage projects, sometimes dedicating an entire notebook to a single project like remodeling our house or preparing for a new baby. Each notebook holds all related ideas, tasks, and plans, acting as a “second brain” to keep my mind clear. When a project is complete, I archive the notebook, bringing a sense of closure and peace.

Final Thoughts
These 10 systems have helped me rely less on my phone and live more intentionally. My pocket notebooks—mostly Field Notes and Loy Term—bring calm, clarity, and consistency to my days. They don’t replace technology but make my interactions with it more precise and effective. If you use pocket notebooks in unique ways, share your tips below.
