HOW I MAKE MONEY Living Van Life in Australia & My Unconventional Retirement Plan

Living the Van Life: Debunking Assumptions and Managing Finances

Introduction

Hey there, folks! Grab a cuppa, and let’s have a real chat about money and the van life. I’m pulling out the microphone and notepad because things are about to get serious. I want to address some assumptions people make about those of us living this unconventional lifestyle and share my personal approach to finances. Spoiler alert: it’s not because I’m broke!

Breaking Down Assumptions

A lot of people assume that living in a van means you’re destitute or down on your luck. For me, that’s far from the truth. I choose this lifestyle because I love it. The freedom, the connection to nature, the simplicity—it’s my jam. Sure, I might rock hippie clothes and call myself a “capitalist hippie” or a “classy bogan,” but don’t let the vibe fool you. I come from a finance background, and I’m all about blending my love for nature with a practical approach to money. It’s a bit of an oxymoron—spiritual yet strategic, free-spirited yet financially savvy.

My Financial Journey

Housing: Why I Don’t Own Property

I’ve owned homes in the past, but for me, property ownership isn’t the dream. It comes with responsibilities—maintenance, taxes, rates—that I’d rather avoid. I know the property market is booming, and I’d never advise selling your home to chase this lifestyle unless it truly aligns with your goals. If you own property, keeping it and leasing it out can be a smart way to generate income. For me, though? I’d rather invest in shares. Less hassle, more flexibility.

At 45, I’ve mulled over jumping back into the property market, but the thought makes me queasy. Even a small plot of land comes with upkeep—fire risks, maintenance, you name it. It’s just not for me. If you’re considering van life long-term, think carefully before exiting the property market. Getting back in can be tough.

Shares and Super: My Investment Strategy

I’m a big believer in long-term investing, whether it’s property or shares. A while back, I compared the two over a 10- to 20-year period, and shares slightly edged out property in growth. That said, markets are volatile, so you’ve got to think long-term and roll with the punches. My superannuation fund is in high growth because I can afford to take risks—no family to support, just me and the open road. If your circumstances are different, adjust accordingly.

My Job: Remote Work and Bookkeeping

I work full-time in finance, specifically bookkeeping and operations, for a company that allows me to work remotely. It’s perfect for van life—just log on, get the work done, and log off. I keep my work life separate from my YouTube persona, but I will say this: remote work is a game-changer. Bookkeeping is a solid option if you’re looking for a flexible, well-paying gig. You don’t need to be a registered BAS agent (which comes with extra hoops like insurance and training hours). I prefer the simplicity of being employed, but you could also freelance on platforms like Fiverr or build a client base.

Other remote options? Graphic design, marketing, social media management, or virtual admin work. The key is to find something you’re passionate about. Don’t trade one soul-sucking job for another just because you’re working with a view. Apply yourself, be consistent, and have faith—the right opportunity will come.

Building Multiple Income Streams

YouTube: A Passion Project with Potential

When I started my YouTube channel, I focused on hiking and travel, not realizing that everyday van life content would resonate most with viewers. Once I leaned into that, my channel took off. It’s still evolving, but I love combining my passion for nature with van life vlogs. YouTube is a bit of passive income—videos can earn money long after they’re posted—but staying consistent with fresh content is key.

I’d love to hit 100,000 subscribers, but I’m not chasing mega-stardom. Social media is unpredictable (you could get canceled overnight!), so I treat every day on YouTube as a blessing. It’s also opened doors to other opportunities, which is why I encourage putting yourself out there.

Artwork: Following My Creative Spark

Art is my other love. I studied graphic design and advertising, but I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in years until recently. Creating art takes me back to my teenage years—blasting music, lost in the flow. I tried print-on-demand for my designs (think mugs and clothing), but the margins were slim, and I had no control over quality. So, I’ve shifted gears. I’ve invested in a massive printer (it barely fits in my van!) to produce my own prints and stickers. I’m building a new website to sell them directly, and I’m excited to see where it leads.

My dream? Park my van, swing out my table, and sell my artwork on the road, with a big magnet displaying my designs on the side of my vehicle. It’s a calculated risk, but it feels right.

Planning for the Future

I don’t plan to fully retire—I believe staying active, mentally and physically, keeps you young. YouTube and my artwork are part of my “retirement” plan, alongside my super and investments. I’m determined to live past 100, so I’m building a life that’s sustainable and fulfilling. Multiple income streams—my job, YouTube, and artwork—give me security in case one falters. Economic uncertainty has made my job feel less stable lately, but I’m confident I could pivot if needed. Still, my heart’s in making YouTube and my artwork long-term.

Final Thoughts

This lifestyle isn’t about escaping financial responsibility—it’s about aligning your money with your values. Whether it’s investing in shares, keeping a property, or finding remote work, make choices that fit your circumstances. I’m not here to be an influencer (ugh, hate that word). I’m just sharing my journey to spark ideas for yours. Got questions? Drop them below, and I’ll answer in a future video. Happy travels!
