How Micro-Adventures May Save Your Creativity & Drive

Embracing Discomfort: A Micro-Adventure to Spark Creativity

For the past eight years, my life has been a series of unconventional homes—an SUV, a truck camper, a tiny home, another truck camper, a sailboat, and now, a house. A very normal, very cozy house. It’s a blessing, no doubt, but it’s also bittersweet. My new home is filled with on-demand comforts: running water, reliable electricity, a toilet that flushes without a second thought, a couch facing a TV with NBA games at my fingertips, a hot tub, an ice bath, an outdoor shower, an espresso machine, and a fridge that doesn’t rely on the sun. The list of conveniences goes on, and I’m deeply grateful for them—and for the job that makes it all possible, playing concerts and traveling weekly. But there’s a catch: comfort can breed laziness, and lately, I’ve felt my creativity, productivity, and drive slipping away.

Discomfort, I’ve learned, is a powerful catalyst. It pushes you to think differently, to create, and to grow. Living in small, unconventional spaces forced me to adapt, to problem-solve, and to find inspiration in the rawness of life. But now, surrounded by coziness, I’ve been craving that edge. I don’t have the time to embark on grand adventures—my job requires me to stay close to the airport for weekly flights to concerts. That’s where the concept of a micro-adventure comes in.

Coined by British adventurer and author Alastair Humphreys, a micro-adventure is defined as a short, achievable outdoor experience for people with normal lives. The New York Times describes it as “short, perspective-shifting bursts of travel closer to home,” like pitching a tent in nearby woods or exploring your city by moonlight. For me, with four days at home and a yearning for discomfort, a micro-adventure felt like the perfect solution. I decided to incorporate my motorcycle and head out for an overnight camping trip, just a short ride from my house.

There was one complication: Sady, my dog. My plan was simple—let Sady out, feed her, ensure the chickens were taken care of, ride out on the motorcycle, camp overnight, and return before Sady’s breakfast expectations. With everything in place, I set off.

I chose a spot just up the road, a place I’ve fly-fished for years but never camped. It was close—only 10 or 15 minutes from home—but it offered the discomfort I craved. The day was hot, the ground wet from recent rain. I passed a fallen tree with a cave-like space under its roots, tempting me to dig for dry wood. With my trusty pot, I collected water from the river, battling the dampness that clung to everything. I forgot a pillow, which was a bummer, but as I settled in with some chicken tikka masala (spicy, maybe too spicy for me), I felt alive. The discomfort was working its magic.

Lying there under the stars, I reflected on my recent creative slump. My art—whether music or video—hasn’t felt as vibrant lately. Comfort, I realized, doesn’t spark creativity for me. Discomfort does. New experiences breed new work, and this small escape was already stirring something within me. Sady was fine, fed, and probably snoozing back home. The chickens were sorted. And me? I was finding my edge again.

The next morning brought an unexpected surprise: a pair of sunglasses tucked away in my gear. I’d lost them ages ago, and finding them felt like a little gift from the universe. With my jacket on and the motorcycle ready, I rode back, recharged and inspired.

This micro-adventure was a reminder that you don’t need to go far to find inspiration. A short trip, a night under the stars, a touch of discomfort—it’s enough to shake things up. I’m committed to weaving more of these moments into my life, and I hope you’ll join me. If you’ve got ideas for micro-adventures or want to see more like this, let me know. For now, I’m grateful for the support that keeps me creating, and I’ll see you out there—maybe on the next adventure.
