Why Choose the Nomad Life?
Joe’s journey into nomadism wasn’t a meticulously planned decision. It was a spontaneous leap driven by dissatisfaction with her renting situation in Santa Fe. “I was looking for another place to live,” she explained, “and suddenly I thought, I’m not going to pay to have this furniture moved again.” That moment of clarity led her to sell nearly everything she owned, keeping just a small bin in a friend’s garage and a single painting at another’s house. “Virtually everything I own in the world is right here,” she said, gesturing to her camper.
Surprisingly, Joe doesn’t miss her old belongings. “I keep shedding more stuff,” she laughed, noting how the nomadic lifestyle reveals what’s truly essential. For Joe, the freedom to move without the burden of possessions outweighs any attachment to material things.
A Peek Inside Joe’s Mobile Home
Joe’s setup is a testament to ingenuity and simplicity. Her 1997 Dodge Cummins, a four-wheel-drive powerhouse, gives her the confidence to venture off the beaten path. The 2004 Lance camper, though not brand-new, is thoughtfully customized to suit her needs. A previous owner reupholstered the interior, adding a vibrant purple theme that Joe has embraced as her signature decor. “I’ve kind of played with this purple as a theme,” she said, pointing to the accents that make her space feel uniquely hers.
The camper is designed for efficiency. An exterior shelf, installed by a friend, serves as an outdoor kitchen, complete with a foldable setup for easy storage. Inside, Joe has maximized every inch of space. A custom shelf, another gift from the previous owner, provides extra storage, while her solar batteries are neatly tucked beneath a tabletop. “I just have to lift this to check them,” she explained, demonstrating the practicality of her setup.
Joe’s camper is equipped with a three-burner stovetop and an oven, which she uses regularly. “I make pizza,” she said proudly, noting that the oven’s residual heat is a cozy bonus during chilly mornings. Instead of relying solely on the camper’s standard furnace, Joe uses an Olympian catalytic heater, cleverly covered with lavender shower caps from the dollar store to keep out sand—a creative and budget-friendly solution. “I bought them for, like, five for a dollar,” she grinned.
The camper’s wet shower, though initially a concern, has become a non-issue. “I just take a few things out, move the rug, and it’s fine,” Joe said. Storage is key in such a compact space, and Joe has mastered the art of organization with drawers, bins, and overhead cabinets. A wardrobe and additional plastic bins keep her clothes and essentials accessible, while a small sewing machine hints at her creative side.
The Joys and Challenges of Nomad Life
Living in a camper comes with its quirks. Climbing up to the bed above the cab requires careful navigation—“a foot here, a foot here, and then up,” Joe demonstrated, gripping a loop for support. Changing the bed is a chore, and she admits to occasionally bumping her head on the low ceilings. “I do it less frequently now, but it’s part of the life,” she said with a chuckle.
Despite these minor inconveniences, Joe loves her home on wheels. “It’s my home on my back, and that’s cool,” she said. The ability to pick up and go without the hassle of packing or moving is a game-changer. Joe is constantly refining her setup to make arrivals and departures as seamless as possible. “I keep trying to make it easier,” she explained, minimizing tasks like setting up chairs or mats.

Joe’s story is a reminder that the nomadic lifestyle is about more than just travel—it’s about embracing simplicity and freedom. Her 1997 Dodge and 2004 Lance camper may not be the newest models, but they’re a perfect fit for her needs.
