The Smart Home Upgrade Under $100 That Americans Swear By in 2025

Easy DIY Projects That Instantly Transform Your Space—Without Breaking the Bank

Home renovations don’t always require a massive budget or contractor team. Sometimes, the most impactful upgrades are also the most affordable. As someone who has spent the last couple of years renovating everything from the kitchen to the outdoors, I’ve discovered a handful of smart, low-cost home upgrades—each under $100—that made a huge difference in my space.

Before diving into those projects, I want to thank today’s sponsor, June’s Journey—a relaxing hidden-object mystery game set in the 1920s. If you haven’t played yet, it’s free on iOS, Android, and Facebook Games. I love unwinding with it after a long day of DIY. Check the description or scan the QR code to download.

Now, let’s talk about smart and stylish upgrades that don’t break the bank.

1. Spray Painting Windows for a Modern Look

I had three large windows in my living room—perfect condition, but they lacked character. Instead of replacing them, I used Farmhouse Black spray paint and black electrical tape to create a faux grid design. The prep was crucial—painter’s tape and paper kept the paint where it belonged. After two light coats, the transformation was striking.

Cost: Under $30
Impact: High-contrast, custom-style look without replacement.

2. Painting Interior Doors with Statement Colors

Don’t underestimate what a little paint can do—especially for interior doors. Using Sherwin-Williams’ Jogging Path, I added depth and dimension to otherwise plain white hallways and dining room spaces. I prepped with a liquid deglosser, primed the door, then painted with a brush and roller combo for a smooth finish.

Pro Tip: Painting the panels first, then rolling over the flat surfaces makes it look professional.

3. Front Door Glow-Up with a Free Window Insert

My front door had a tiny window and desperately needed light. Instead of buying a new door (which would cost $300+), I found a free window insert on Facebook Marketplace. After carefully cutting into the existing door with a jigsaw and installing the window insert, I gave it a fresh coat of paint.

Total cost: practically free—only the paint was paid for!
Impact: More natural light and a modernized entryway.

4. Hardware & Faucet Swaps in the Bathroom

Changing out vanity hardware and faucets instantly elevates any space. In my half-bath makeover, I originally used the faucet and knobs that came with a $40 vanity I scored on Marketplace. But swapping them for gold versions completely changed the vibe—giving it a luxurious, custom feel.

Cost: ~$50
Style Boost: Major!

5. Accent Walls that Speak Volumes

Accent walls are one of my favorite under-$100 hacks. You can choose from

  • Batten walls (seen in my dining room and daughter’s room)

  • Beadboard paneling

  • Box molding (used in the bedroom, entryway, and living room)

  • Shiplap (I like vertical for a more modern touch)

  • Trim design and even faux brick walls

These upgrades add architectural interest without architectural costs.

6. Light Fixture Upgrades: Style Meets Function

You don’t have to spend a fortune to modernize your lighting. I replaced dated hallway lights and front entry lights with affordable Amazon finds. For bathrooms, if new fixtures aren’t in the budget, try spray painting existing ones—like turning a chrome fixture into brushed brass.

Big Win: I swapped out a fluorescent light with recessed lighting—clean, bright, and far more modern.

7. Framing Builder-Grade Mirrors for a Custom Finish

The typical glued-on, frameless mirror in bathrooms? Functional but boring. I removed mine, had it trimmed by a local glass shop for $10, and then used wood trim with a routed edge to create a snug frame. Finished with Minwax Early American stain, it looked like a high-end custom mirror.

DIY Cost: ~$30
Retail Price for Similar Style: $800+
Savings: Massive.

Final Thoughts

Making your home feel more like your home doesn’t have to come with designer price tags. These under-$100 upgrades gave me real, noticeable change—and they’re projects that anyone can tackle.

If you’re looking to refresh your space without overspending, try one of these smart hacks.
