Transforming Our Garage into a Gym!! I $1200 Project: I DIY Home Gym!

Transforming Our Garage into a Dream Home Gym

After four months in our new home, my partner Jerry and I have tackled numerous projects, but none have been as exciting as converting our garage into a fully functional gym. This week-long endeavor has transformed a plain space into a vibrant workout haven, and I’m thrilled to share the journey with you!

The Vision

When we first closed on our house, I shared a video showcasing its potential. Since then, we’ve been busy bringing our ideas to life. The garage gym was a major goal, blending functionality with aesthetics. Jerry and I love collaborating on a shared vision—he handles the heavy lifting, while I focus on decor and finishing touches. This dynamic has worked perfectly for every project in our home, and the gym was no exception.

The Process

Unfortunately, we didn’t capture a “before” video, but I have photos from the night before we started. The transformation began with the floors. Jerry etched the concrete, sprayed it down, and let it dry for 72 hours. We then applied a stunning blue epoxy mixed with mica for a shimmery effect. While the floor cured for a week (during which I was away on a cruise), we planned the setup.

Once the floor was ready, we assembled gym equipment, including a power tower for pull-ups and ab workouts, a weight bench, and a resistance bar. Building the equipment was surprisingly straightforward and took just a few days. Jerry assisted with heavier tasks, while I added decor elements to surprise him—a process I love!

The Setup

Our gym is both functional and personalized. Here’s a rundown of what we included:

  • Flooring: Blue epoxy with mica for a glossy, durable finish.

  • Equipment: power tower, weight bench, resistance bands (Whitney Simmons brand), glute bands, jump ropes, aerobic step, foam roller, yoga mat, and an acupressure mat. Most items were sourced from Amazon, with mirrors from Walmart and exercise mats from TJ Maxx.

  • Decor: Framed quotes from our favorite TV shows, layered over scenic photos we took or found online. A cute sign, a wax melt for ambiance, and a picture of us add warmth to the space.

  • Functional Storage: Since it’s still a garage, we kept brooms, a lawnmower, a weed whacker, and my scooter organized in storage areas. An Igloo cooler doubles as a rest spot or drink holder during workouts.

  • Tech: A TV for workout videos and a charging station for tools.

  • Special Touch: My fitness pole, a gag gift from my parents for my 21st birthday, which I genuinely love for workouts.

Challenges and Tweaks

Not everything went perfectly. We ordered mirrors from Walmart, but they arrived covered in gum (yes, really!). Walmart is sending replacements, so we’ll add those soon. There are also minor tweaks planned, like refining storage, but the space is already highly functional.

The Reveal

When Jerry saw the finished gym, he was blown away. The shimmery floors, vibrant decor, and thoughtfully arranged equipment exceeded our expectations. It’s a space that inspires us to work out while still serving as a practical garage for our family’s needs.
