Filmmakers often say the best camera is the one you have with you, which, for most of us, is our iPhone. Smartphones have made capturing high-quality photos and videos effortless, but something feels missing. Recently, I explored this gap by picking up a camcorder and taking it to my hometown to film a weekend. My goal? To understand why, in 2025, so many people are ditching their iPhones for camcorders and digital cameras.
The Allure of Camcorders
The first thing I noticed while filming with friends was how nondiscreet a camcorder is. Unlike the ubiquitous sight of smartphones snapping photos or videos, a camcorder stands out. Holding one in public felt less like I was invading someone’s space and more like I was wielding a cool, unique toy. People didn’t seem to mind the lens pointed at them; instead, they were curious about the device. My friends noticed the camera more than they would an iPhone, but the vibe was playful, not intrusive. There wasn’t the underlying pressure that whatever I recorded could instantly end up online, which made filming feel less obtrusive.
The Joy of Tactile Filmmaking
Smartphones are sleek, but their touchscreens make filming feel monotonous—just tapping glass. Camcorders, on the other hand, bring a tactile joy that’s missing from modern devices. Flipping out a screen, pushing buttons, turning knobs, and toggling a zoom rocker feel engaging and fun. During my weekend shoot, I couldn’t resist overusing the zoom. With a 60x zoom, I could see details of far-off objects, turning the camera into a pair of binoculars that let me observe the world in a fresh way. Sure, I had to shoot some still shots to avoid nauseating my audience, but the zoom was so satisfying that I didn’t care.
This tactile experience makes you want to use the camera. It’s not just about capturing a moment; it’s about enjoying the process of doing so. In a world dominated by touchscreens, the physicality of a camcorder feels like a rebellion against the mundane.
Nostalgia Meets Intentionality
Nostalgia is undeniably a driving force behind the camcorder’s resurgence. My first camera was a family camcorder, long before I moved on to point-and-shoots and iPods. For many, camcorders evoke memories of childhood home videos, grainy footage, and simpler times. But nostalgia alone doesn’t explain why people are actually using them.
The real magic lies in the intentionality camcorders demand. Unlike an iPhone, which lets you record, upload, and share in seconds, camcorders slow you down. It takes about 15 seconds to get one ready to shoot—long enough that the moment you wanted to capture might pass. But when you do catch it, the reward is immense. You feel like you’ve truly earned that footage. After recording, the footage stays on an SD card until you manually transfer it to a computer. There’s a risk involved; the card could malfunction, and your memories could be lost. Yet, that fragility makes the moments you capture feel more precious. As I discovered, things become more special when they can be lost.
Camcorder vs. iPhone: A Trade-Off
There’s no denying the convenience of an iPhone. It’s always with you, ready to record at a moment’s notice, and your footage is instantly backed up to the cloud, shareable with a tap. Camcorders can’t compete with that speed or ease. But they offer something smartphones can’t: a sense of purpose and presence. Filming with a camcorder forces you to be deliberate, to focus on the moment rather than the potential likes or retweets.
Should You Get a Camcorder?
If you’re craving a filmmaking experience that feels meaningful—something your iPhone can’t replicate—then a camcorder might be for you. It’s not just about the footage; it’s about rediscovering the joy of creating, the thrill of tactile controls, and the weight of intentionality. But if you just need a quick way to capture your day-to-day life, stick with the camera you already have in your pocket.
As I filmed my weekend, I realized camcorders aren’t just a nostalgic gimmick. They’re a reminder that sometimes, slowing down and embracing imperfection can make our memories feel more alive. So, grab a camcorder, flip out that screen, and start zooming. You might just see the world in a whole new way.
